I don't believe that I can express what a life-changing experience this has been for the students and me! So much has happened since I last posted - I will do my best not to leave anything out.
Yesterday, we went to Teotihuacan, an archeological site. We all climbed to the top of both the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon (despite several of us having a pretty serious fear of heights). Pictures coming! We then traveled to Real Del Monte, a silver mining town. We were treated to a seat at the "Chef's Table" (in the kitchen, for you non-foodies!). We were able to see firsthand how the Pastes were made. Pastes are a pastry that are filled with beans, potatoes, or meat. The miners would pack them for a long shift in the mines. Again, pics are coming!
Today, we visited Tula, another archeological site. The ruins there are believed to be built by the Toltecs. At both of the archeological sites we were blessed with the most breath-taking views. We pondered what it would have been like when Teotihuacan was a vital marketplace.
When we returned from Tula, Tio Juan (our host) treated us to an amazing Sunday dinner at the house. The family ate with us for the first time this week. As is the custom, Dr. Donald Gregory (prof from Reinhardt U) presented Tio Juan with a bottle of tequila to express our gratitude for his hospitality.
It has been such a treat to watch the students - Melissa, "Lasky", Milton, Tiffany, Devon, and Ashley - navigate their way through a new culture. A few have become quite efficient at "bargaining" during our shopping trips. Each is learning a little more Spanish each day. (However, we have ALL commented at one time or another that we wish we knew the language better)!
I must sign off for now. I am hoping to get some pictures uploaded soon. For those of you following this blog, Melissa and I will post our pics to Facebook when we return - just "friend" one of us!
Adios!
